The Kansas legislature passed the Kansas Clean Indoor Air Act making all public places and workplaces statewide smoke free, including restrictions in bars and restaurants.  The law becomes effective on July 1, 2010, and provides exemptions for private clubs in existence before Jan. 1, 2009, tobacco retail shops, 20% of hotel rooms and casino floors throughout the state.

The Unified Government of KCK/Wyandotte County passed a smoking ordinance in 2008 that allowed exemptions bars, restaurants and workplaces who hold a special smoking license in addition to private clubs and retail tobacco shops.  Under new state law all bars, restaurants and workplaces within KCK/Wyandotte County will comply with the statewide smoking restrictions.  All hotels in KC/Wyandotte will comply with the state's restriction of no more than 20% of a hotel's rooms will allow smoking.  Any private club located within KCK/Wyandotte before Jan. 1, 2009 will be included in the smoking exemptions.
