The Kansas legislature passed the Kansas Clean Indoor Air Act making all public places and workplaces statewide smoke free, including restrictions in bars and restaurants. The law becomes effective on July 1, 2010, and provides exemptions for private clubs in existence before Jan. 1, 2009, tobacco retail shops, 20% of hotel rooms and casino floors throughout the state.
Shawnee passed a city-wide smoking ordinance in 2007 that allowed exemptions for bars with less than 33% of sales from food. Under the new state law all Shawnee bars will need to comply with the state's smoking restrictions. All hotels in Shawnee will comply with the state's restriction of no more than 20% of a hotel's rooms will allow smoking. Any private club located within Shawnee will be included in all statewide smoking restrictions.
